Guatamala’s Fuego Volcano Tragedy


Tragic scenes arrive from Guatamala. The news talks of 200 missing, 3,000 displaced persons and at least 75 dead from the eruption of the Fuego Volcano, which surprised the inhabitants of the surrounding villages on June 3rd. The numbers are expected to increase, according to local authorities. The catastrophe is being compared to the volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius in Pompei, Italy (79 AD), making the work of the rescuers much harder.

Pope Francis expressed his “closeness and consolation for the relatives of the victims, and his sorrow for the sudden natural disaster, his prayers for all who have been affected, as well as his prayers for rescue workers. The search for bodies beneath the huge quantities of lava and ash continues uninterrupted.
