The nomination signifies a “continuity in the precious contribution” given by the Focolare movement to the work of the Council

Maria Voce nominated by Pope Benedict XVI as Consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Laity

Pope Benedict XVI has nominated Focolare President, Maria Voce, as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

The Council is a Dicastory of the Roman Curia at the service of the laity. Its work has included the Pentecost Vigils which have gathered together the new ecclesial movements and communities in Rome – including the historic event in 1998 attended by Pope John Paul II – and the World Youth Days. The Council has a well developed “youth” section, and also deals with the concerns of women, and the Church’s relationship with sport, as well as with lay associations and movements.

On December 2, in a letter accompanying the Pope’s decision, Cardinal Stanislao Rylko, the President of the Council expressed his “warmest congratulations” and his “satisfaction at the guarantee of continuity of the precious contribution that the Opera di Maria (Focolare Movement), in the person of the unforgettable Chiara Lubich,  has always given to the activity of the Council.”

The Council’s consultors attend the Plenary Assembly, working sessions, and are consulted personally on specific questions.
