Chiara came again in 1968 to the United States for a brief private visit to New York and Chicago. It was the only time she ever traveled to the “windy city.” In the few but precious hours spent there, Chiara spoke about many things: impressions of the trip, her joy at how much things have grown, and new plans for the American regions.

Many people who are part of the Focolare Movement all over America met the spirituality of unity through a Scalabrinian priest Fr Joe Scopa. In the mid 1950’s Fr Joe participated in one of the Mariapolis’ in Trent. Afterwards he began giving classes on living the gospel to members of his parish in the Chicago area.  It was there that he was able to share his experience of the charism of unity.  Many people then wanted to get in touch with the focolare that had arrived in Chicago in December 1964.

From that first seed, the Ideal spread in the Midwest. Now it is in many other states: Minnesota, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Ohio, Missouri, Michigan, South Dakota, Illinois, Tennessee, Iowa, and Indiana.

WYD – JASNA Experiences

Teenagers and young adults, who traveled to Poland and Slovakia for World Youth Day and the Jasna Youth School, spent time praying, praising God, and immersing themselves in a crowd of their peers. This experience was a true pilgrimage experience in the sense that many such sacrifices were made, from walking for hours, to spending a day or night completely drenched from pouring rain; from waiting for hours for a bus that never came, to taking cold showers, etc… But these experiences created solidarity and a supernatural atmosphere among the Midwest Focolare youth.

Greek Orthodox Great Vespers for the Feast of the Induction and the Protection of the Environment

Members of the Focolare movement in the Chicago area participated in the liturgy and reception on the Greek Orthodox feast of the Great Vespers for the Feast of the Induction and the Protection of the Environment. The celebration was held for the Chicago area at the Church of Sts. Peter and Paul in Glenview. Sts. Peter and Paul is a very beautiful, colorful, icon-filled, bright and welcoming structure and was a perfect setting for such a majestic ceremony. The ceremony manifested the majesty of God, as shared by the Focolare members in attendance.
