{"id":305846,"date":"2018-01-31T01:10:07","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T00:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/algeria-martyrs-for-god\/"},"modified":"2024-05-15T20:36:18","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T18:36:18","slug":"algeria-martyrs-for-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/algeria-martyrs-for-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Algeria: martyrs for God"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-160665\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/MartyrsAlgeria.jpg\" alt=\"MartyrsAlgeria\" width=\"320\" height=\"221\" \/>The Vatican has promulgated the decree attesting to the martyrdom of the 7 monks of Tibhirine,<\/strong> among whom Msgr Pierre Claverie, Bishop of Orano, and the other 11 male and female consecrated religious, killed between 1994 and 1996 during the Algerian civil war which caused the death of thousands of innocent people among which journalists, writers, Imams and common folk.  <strong>A movie entitled \u201cOf Gods and Men\u201d<\/strong> was made about the 7 Trappist monks who were abducted from their abbey of Our Lady of Atlante \u00a0(80 km from Algiers) and slain in still obscure circumstances. These vicissitudes reached their peak in August 1996, when the Dominican Bishop of Orano, fervid defender of the reconciliation between Muslims and Christians, was killed together with his Muslim driver, by a bomb at the entrance of his house. The spokesman of the French Bishops\u2019 Conference said \u201cThey are martyrs of love because they loved up to the end, giving their lives for their Algerian friends.
