{"id":326800,"date":"2014-11-11T04:10:25","date_gmt":"2014-11-11T03:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/new-zealand-a-peace-that-is-gentle-and-strong-like-the-kowhai\/"},"modified":"2024-05-16T14:58:26","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T12:58:26","slug":"new-zealand-a-peace-that-is-gentle-and-strong-like-the-kowhai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/new-zealand-a-peace-that-is-gentle-and-strong-like-the-kowhai\/","title":{"rendered":"New Zealand: A peace that is gentle and strong, like the Kowhai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div id=\"attachment_113981\" style=\"width: 189px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113981\" class=\" wp-image-113981  \" style=\"margin-left: 10px\" alt=\"20141111-04\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-04.jpg\" width=\"179\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-113981\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L&#8217;arcivescovo John Dew di Wellington<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We are in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/focolare-worldwide\/oceania\/nuova-zelanda\/\">New Zealand<\/a><b>, <\/b><strong>in the heart of Wellington<\/strong><b>, <\/b>capital of a land that has opened its arms to many peoples. <b>Urged by the news of wars in Iraq, Gaza, Ukraine and Central Africa; <\/b>the growing fear of Ebola; and the Pope&#8217;s many appeals for peace, some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/movimento-dei-focolari\/un-popolo\/giovani-per-un-mondo-unito\/\">young people<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/movimento-dei-focolari\/\">Focolare Movement<\/a> in New Zealand felt the need to gather in a public place and voice their longing for peace.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Archbishop of Wellington, <\/b><strong>Most Rev. John Dew<\/strong>, contributed personally to the evening event, which included songs, prayers and testimonies. There was also a witness offered by \u00a0two young women from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/focolare-worldwide\/asia\/iraq\/\">Iraq <\/a>who had met in New Zealand and were followed by their families to that land: <b>Sendirella, a Catholic, and Ayssar, a Muslim. <\/b>They spoke about what had united them in their homeland. They had first met at the home of a common friend and from there a friendship began that led them to share their dreams, studies and travel. <b>Sendirella said &#8220;we&#8217;re different,&#8221; but Aysser quickly added, &#8220;but we are the same.&#8221; <\/b>They said that for many people religion is the great difference, perhaps even the great obstacle, but it was never a problem for them; on the contrary, it drew them closer. &#8220;In the religion of one,&#8221; said Sendrella, &#8220;we&#8217;ve always recognised elements of the religion of the other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_113985\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-113985\" class=\" wp-image-113985 \" style=\"margin-right: 10px\" alt=\"20141111-05\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-05.jpg\" width=\"269\" height=\"179\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-113985\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sendirella e Ayssar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then,<strong> they talked about their country.<\/strong> Today&#8217;s Iraq is associated with war, fleeing minorities and torture, but the Iraq of their parents was one where your neighbour could be a Christian, Muslim, Jew or Yazidi; &#8220;an Iraq,&#8221; Ayssar said, &#8220;where the difference of religion was always accepted as a fact, not a problem.&#8221; Now that Iraq seems so far away. &#8220;They&#8217;ve told us that peace is impossible,&#8221; Sendirella continued: &#8220;But we know that peace is not merely a word in a constitution, it&#8217;s not some particular form of government, nor air-raids meant to enforce peace. We know that that peace lies in the daily observance of our values, that it&#8217;s something that comes from the bottom up, rather than from the top down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-01.jpg\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-113988\" style=\"margin-left: 10px\" alt=\"20141111-01b\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-01b.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"194\" \/><\/strong><\/a><strong>A young university student called Kathleen <\/strong>told how she felt urged to ask forgiveness following a misunderstanding among the students with whom she shared a flat. Before, that would have been a very difficult and demanding thing for her to do, but as it turned out, it opened the door to a new and better relationship with the other girls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-113980\" style=\"margin-right: 10px\" alt=\"20141111-02\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/20141111-021.jpg\" width=\"191\" height=\"286\" \/><strong>The evening prayer concluded<\/strong> with an invitation to become builders of peace, sealing that commitment with the knotting of a white ribbon to a small Kowhai tree. This tree with a Maori name originated in New Zealand. It has many medicinal qualities and several species of birds are nourished by its rich nectar. With delicate branches the Kowhai is a strong tree that can reach heights of 20 metres. It was a perfect symbol of the humble but powerful cry for peace that went forth from those young people on that night of prayer.<\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On September 26, 2014 young people from the Focolare launched an invitation to &#8220;pray for peace&#8221;, remembering lands that are currently undergoing violence and war.
