{"id":340400,"date":"2011-12-27T08:06:53","date_gmt":"2011-12-27T07:06:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/egypt-i-belong-project\/"},"modified":"2024-06-06T12:04:27","modified_gmt":"2024-06-06T10:04:27","slug":"egypt-i-belong-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/en\/egypt-i-belong-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt: \u201cI Belong\u201d Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>We are reporting \u00a0the experience of Hanaa Keisar, told in occasion of the conferment of \u201c Mother Teresa of Calcutta prize\u201d, in memory of Chiara Lubich, on the 10<sup>th<\/sup> of December 2011<\/em>  <img alt=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-51739\" style=\"margin-left: 10px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Inizio-del-lavoro.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" \/>\u201cAs you know, a new chapter in the history of Egypt\u00a0 had begun this year, with the unexpected\u00a0 fall of the dictatorial regime.  At nearly a year from the initial signs of hope and freedom as a breeze of fresh air, we find ourselves in a delicate phase where along with the great economic crisis and fear of the future, insecurity and discouragement reign among all.  But in spite of this difficult situation, we have seen with astonishment the intervention of God who, in a discrete way, is helping us sew a hidden tapestry, weaved with real brotherly relationships.  <img alt=\"\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-51741\" style=\"margin-right: 10px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.focolare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Libera-espressione-di-un-abitante-del-quartiere1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"120\" \/>While the newspapers and television were transmitting to you the bloody attacks on churches in various parts of the country, and the acts of violence against the crowds during the peaceful manifestations in Tahrir Square, at the same exact time, in one of the districts of Great Cairo,\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0Christians and Muslims<\/strong> were<strong> working together,<\/strong>\u2013 all animated by the Ideal of unity that Chiara has transmitted to us &#8211; in a project, even if a small one, but is a symbol of unity: the project <strong>\u201cI belong\u201d<\/strong>.  In front of the mistrust, disinterest and indifference of many Egyptians, the goal of the project is to <strong>give back to the people the sense of belonging to their country, encouraging <\/strong>\u00a0them to discover its cultural treasures, starting by cleaning the dirty and neglected angles of the city.  Thus, an initiative was born \u2013 promoted by the Egyptian artist Elhamy Naguib \u2013 to paint murals that express brotherhood, peace and harmony that help make people responsible in civic engagements.  So, we launched ourselves together with <strong>40 young people and adults, for 2 days, <\/strong>\u00a0painting the wall of a school in a poor district, with the theme <strong>\u201cWe have the right to dream!\u201d<\/strong>.  We were 8 months away from the 25<sup>th<\/sup> January revolution. Even if everything was legal, the next day we got news from the municipality to erase the painting, without any explanations.
