Dopo l’interesse suscitato dalla “Giornata dei cinque miliardi” tenutasi l’11 luglio 1987, l’Assemblea Generale delle Nazioni Unite decise di portare avanti l’iniziativa, istituendo la Giornata mondiale della Popolazione, al fine di promuovere una maggiore consapevolezza sui temi legati a questo argomento, e fra questi le correlazioni con l’ambiente e lo sviluppo. Essa si celebrò per la prima volta l’11 luglio 1990, in più di 90 Paesi.
