(English) The Focolare arrived in the US on September 14, 1961. Giovanna Vernuccio, Sharry Silvi and Antonio Petrilli* landed in New York City. The 2 women found an apartment in downtown Manhattan while Antonio and his companion, Joseph Patron who came a few months later, settled in Queens.
The Focolare grew and spread in many other cities such as Boston, in 1964, and then South Jersey and Philadelphia. Then toward the south to Washington D.C. (the women’s Focolare opened in 1983, and the men’s in 1995), North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and all the way to the tip of Florida.
The East Coast includes parts of the Caribbean, with lively and mature local communities. The spirituality arrived first to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and from there the community helped to form the community of Santo Domingo.
