The Experience of Feeling Like an Outsider

Oct 1, 2026

Idea of the Month - October 2026

Being an outsider is not simply a matter of nationality or legal status. It is a deeply human experience, one that almost all of us have known at some point in our lives.

We feel like outsiders whenever we find ourselves in unfamiliar surroundings: a new country, a new workplace, a school, a care home, a social group, or even a family that is not our own. We may feel equally out of place when younger generations communicate in ways we struggle to understand, or when the society we once felt part of seems to have changed beyond recognition. All of us know what it is like not quite to belong. It is a shared experience that can help us understand the feelings of others.

Human history has always been shaped by encounters between different peoples and cultures. Migration has often brought tensions and difficulties, but it has also enriched societies, broadened horizons and encouraged new forms of community. Seen in this light, migration is not merely a challenge to be managed. It is also an opportunity to renew and strengthen our sense of shared humanity. It calls us to move beyond the comfort of what is familiar and reach out to those whose lives and experiences differ from our own.

The real challenge is to face this period of profound change with eyes that can recognise the hope that migration brings, transforming hospitality from a simple act of welcome into an opportunity to build deeper human bonds.

We can begin with small acts of kindness and openness. On their own they may seem insignificant, but together they form a quiet yet powerful chain of solidarity, capable of standing against the forces that divide and diminish our common humanity.

In one of her final public addresses, delivered in London in June 2004, Chiara Lubich expressed this conviction: “Our experience tells us that, for those who today set out to move the mountains of hatred and violence, the task is immense. Yet what is impossible for millions of isolated and divided individuals appears to become possible for people who have made mutual love, mutual understanding and unity the driving force of their lives”

When we live in this way, dialogue becomes more than conversation. It becomes a way of life in which differences are no longer viewed as barriers, but as gifts that enrich the whole community and contribute to the common good.

A Swiss parish priest offers a striking example of this reality when reflecting on what he learned while living in a reception centre for migrants. On the one hand, he became aware of how easily prejudice can take root, often unnoticed, within us. On the other, he witnessed the extraordinary power of human encounter to transform lives:
“One example: here in Lucerne, a young man from Rwanda lived with us for three years. He had no identity papers and was in a fragile psychological state when he arrived. The early months were not easy. Yet gradually his true personality began to shine through again, and our diverse community flourished in ways we could never have imagined. We laughed together, celebrated together, prayed together, and faced uncertainties and major challenges side by side. We became a family. This was especially evident on the day when our Rwandan friend was forced to leave. Four police officers arrived at our home to take him back to his country against his wishes. They were surprised to find ten people from different nations gathered to say goodbye, and to encounter an atmosphere of peace and affection despite the sadness of the moment. Five years have passed, yet the deep family bond created among us remains alive across continents. [1]

THE IDEA OF THE MONTH is currently produced by the Focolare Movement’s “Centre for Dialogue with People of Nonreligious Beliefs”. It is an initiative that began in 2014 in Uruguay to share with non-believing friends the values of the Word of Life, i.e. the phrase from Scripture that members of the Movement strive to put into practice in their daily lives. Currently, THE IDEA OF THE MONTH is translated into 12 languages and distributed in more than 25 countries, with adaptations of the text according to different cultural sensitivities. www.dialogue4unity.focolare.org

Living the Gospel: Love as the Fulfilment of Life

Love is a gift from God that we are called to share with others, becoming people who knowing they are loved are capable of loving. Loving our neighbour means choosing their good in concrete ways, as Jesus teaches us through his life and as St Paul writes: “Love does no harm to a neighbour; therefore love is the fulfilment of the law” (Romans 13:10).
