Conference on Integral Ecology – for social and ecological transformation

11-13 January 2024. Conference on Integral Ecology – for social and ecological transformation

Starting afresh from Laudato Sì on the 10th anniversary of the Pontificate of Pope Francis

On Wednesday 10th January at the Sophia University Institute the conference on the topic of integral ecology: ‘For a social and ecological transformation’ organised by DIALOP Transversal Dialogue Project, a ‘dialogue platform’ between the European Left and the Vatican – www.dialop.eu started.

The aim of the conference to be held from 11 to 13 January is to reread the document Laudato Sì considering, against the backdrop, the too weak countermeasures to the climate crisis undertaken so far, as well as the clear failure of important economic-political efforts to avoid global climate collapse. “We share the strong warning of Pope Francis: “… this economy kills” (EG 53) – so says José Manuel Pureza of the University of Coimbra, on behalf of the conference’s scientific committee – and we condemn the deep-seated reasons for the ongoing climate catastrophe. Our conviction is that the only way out is a serious and concerted response to the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth’.

The invited experts intend to go beyond a technocratic vision and rather emphasise philosophical, theological and humanistic aspects that, coming from different visions, can forcefully highlight the stalemate of the ecological crisis, if it does not start from an awareness of an anthropological, even more than ecological, handicap.

Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonca, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Catholic Education will open the conference on the afternoon of 11 January 2024 in the Aula Magna of the Sophia University Institute.
