Mariapolis in Iceland

A Mariapolis took place in Iceland 22nd-25th June.

About 30 people from the Philippines, Syria, Ukraine, Poland and Holland attended, mostly from the Focolare Community in Iceland which is coordinated by Irish priest, Fr. Denis. Hilda Killian, Susan and Aidan Gately from Ireland went to support the event which was not without challenges. Three weeks ago the original venue in Northern Iceland became unavailable. Finding somewhere else at such short notice seemed an impossible ask, but the miracle occurred and Skálholt a town and church in Biskupstungur in Árnes County became the new venue. The Mariapolis was marked by great diversity and depth. The Friday Question and Answer session lasted nearly two hours, with beautiful, respectful answers on “Why do we need Jesus to go to God?” including input from a Buddhist and a Hindu who shared their insights into the pathways to God. Susan said, “Through sharing our lives and stories, and moments of deep prayer and fun, we feel the presence of Jesus among us has grown in this beautiful place, enveloping us and making us into one big family.”
