“A Call for Peace: Reject War and Nuclear Weapons”

The Focolare Movement in Italy has joined with Catholic Action, Christian Workers, Pope John 23rd Community and Pax Christi to start 2024 with a strong appeal to the Italian Government and Parliament to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East. The massacre of innocents must absolutely be stopped. Politics and diplomacy must return with determination to being the means for resolving international disputes.

If you want peace, work for peace. Weapons bring only death and destruction.

As we approach the end of this year marked by the tragedy in the Holy Land and the ongoing suffering of the Ukrainian people in the heart of Europe, every reasonable plea to end the madness of war and the massacre of innocents remains tragically unanswered.

The current time urges deep reflection and conversion to prevent us from being passive and indifferent in the face of decisions seemingly left solely to the leaders of nations. Pope Francis emphasizes the futility of preserving authority that will be remembered for its failure to intervene when urgent and necessary.

As citizens of this country and the world, on the eve of 2024, there is a strong call to place the rejection of war, starting with the need to ban not only the use but also the possession of nuclear weapons, at the centre of public discourse.

Italy, with its historical and moral role, is urged to promote a culture of peace in an increasingly uncertain scenario. The rise of artificial intelligence introduces serious political questions within a technocratic paradigm, as noted by Pope Francis. The current paradox involves entrusting the final decision of a mass-destructive lethal weapon to an algorithm, emphasizing the need to remember our humanity.

The new year should commence with January dedicated to peace, openly addressing Italy’s adherence to the 2017 UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. This presents a significant opportunity to reposition Europe at the core of a peace process.

There is a strong appeal to the government and parliament to raise Italy’s voice for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East. The slaughter of innocents must be halted, with politics and diplomacy fervently returning as means for international dispute resolution.

Similarly, political forces are urged to mobilize for Europe to decisively take part in a peace initiative in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The logic of weapons leads only to death and destruction.
