A Blessed Encounter with Pope Francis
The choir’s visit to Rome was marked by an extraordinary encounter with Pope Francis. This special moment was filled with excitement and reverence as the members of Canticle had the opportunity to meet the Pope in person. The audience with Pope Francis was not only a profound spiritual experience but also a source of inspiration for the choir as they embarked on their journey of musical and personal growth.
An Intensive Week with Gen Verde
Following their visit to Rome, Canticle travelled to Loppiano for a week-long retreat focused on music formation. This retreat was facilitated by Gen Verde, a group renowned for its vibrant and contemporary approach to sacred music. Under the guidance of Nancy Uelmen, the Director of Music for Gen Verde, the choir engaged in intensive rehearsals and workshops designed to enhance their musical skills and deepen their understanding of Gen Verde’s repertoire. Canticle was warmly welcomed by Sally McAllister, Gen Verde’s Belfast born manager who was delighted to meet the vibrant young people from her home town and exchange experiences with them.
For several months leading up to this retreat, Canticle had been diligently preparing by working on Gen Verde’s music. This preparation paid off as they collaborated closely with Gen Verde and an accomplished ensemble of musicians, creating a dynamic and enriching learning environment.
A Memorable Sunday Service
The highlight of the retreat was undoubtedly the Sunday Mass at Loppiano, where Canticle had the privilege of joining the local community in worship. This service was a culmination of the week’s efforts, showcasing the choir’s growth and the fruits of their collaboration with Gen Verde. The choir’s performance, marked by harmony and spiritual depth, left a lasting impression on both the participants and the congregation.
The retreat was more than just an opportunity to improve musically; it was a time for personal and spiritual growth. The members of Canticle were not only honing their musical abilities but also forging deep connections with the Loppiano community and their mentors from Gen Verde. The experience of sharing music and faith in such an intimate and supportive environment was transformative for all involved.
Reflections on a Graced Journey
Reflecting on their journey, the members of Canticle expressed their profound gratitude for the experiences and opportunities they encountered. The chance to meet Pope Francis, work closely with Gen Verde, and participate in the vibrant community life of Loppiano were highlights that will be cherished for years to come.
This journey underscored the power of music as a means of spiritual expression and communal bonding. For Canticle, this trip was not just about music; it was about connecting with others, deepening their faith, and growing together as a choir. The lessons learned and the memories created during this extraordinary week will undoubtedly influence their music and ministry long into the future.
