The Pact of Unity, July 16, 1949

Chiara Lubich recounts to a group of young people, the mystical experience of the summer of 1949 which laid the foundations for the nascent Focolare Movement.

Chiara Lubich was surrounded by 50 young people and several professors from the Focolare’s Centre for Studies who were about to give birth to the Abba School and the future Sophia University Institute. Chiara wished to speak to them from the heart, conveying to them that particular experience with Igino Giordani that lies at the foundation of the Focolare Movement: the Pact of Unity at Holy Communion. It was July 16, 1949; Chiara was 29 years old. This year marks a particularly significant dual anniversary: the 23rd anniversary of the death of Cardinal François-Xavier Nguyên Van Thuân (16th September 2002) and the 50th of the period in which, after his arrest (15 August 1975), he wrote 1001 thoughts in prison addressed to all the baptized, later collected in the volume “The Way of Hope”. His memory lives on as that of a faithful pastor who knew how to transform prison into a space of prayer, forgiveness and offering: a man who showed how no chain can suffocate hope and that the light of the Gospel overcomes all darkness.
