To embroider patterns of light on the crowd

Anniversary_logoOne of Chiara Lubich’s best known reflections sums up the Focolare founder’s charism on the tenth anniversary of her death. It is to reach “the highest contemplation” and share in “God’s plans for humanity.” The charism of unity is a driver of social change.

I would say even more: to lose oneself in the crowd in order to fill it with the divine, like a piece of bread dipped in wine. I would say even more: made sharers in God’s plans for humanity, to embroider patterns of light on the crowd, and at the same time to share with our neighbor shame, hunger, troubles, brief joys. During his recent audience with all the participants of the General Assembly of the Focolare Movement, Pope Leo XIV commented: “Unity is a seed – simple yet powerful – which attracts thousands of men and women, inspires vocations, and generates a zeal for evangelisation, as well as social, cultural, artistic and economic works, and is a leaven for ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.” Here are some words from Chiara Lubich, spoken on the 9th of November 1989 during a “Link-up”, which present unity to us as the rock upon which our lives are built.
