We had a beautiful afternoon on 12th January 2019 in the Focolare house in Glasgow, when Christians from 5 denominations gathered together for a moment of reflection, as we journeyed together towards ‘That all may be one’ (Jn 17:21).
A very special milestone in this journey had been the ‘Travelling Together’ conference in Rome in May 2017, which many of the participants of the afternoon had attended. No wonder the title of this new appointment was ‘Travelling On’. Moments of deep silence and also of lively sharing accompanied the much appreciated contribution from Rev. Dr. Callan Slipper, National Ecumenical Officer for the Church of England, on ‘Living Communion: Chiara Lubich’s gift to the Churches’. Jesus Forsaken as the ‘key’ to unity was one of the insights on the spirituality of unity which struck many, as well as the reciprocal-Trinitarian model of ‘giving and receiving’. We certainly left this ‘stop’ on the journey enriched and inspired to live what we had heard: to be ‘empty’ of ourselves, so as to fully welcome the other, and to ‘communicate’ what we have, as a gift.
