Welwyn/Hatfield InterFaith Shared Supper

For many years our local Welwyn/Hatfield InterFaith group have celebrated National InterFaith Week in November by hosting a shared supper at the Focolare Centre for Unity.  It being our most popular event of our busy year, we decided to also hold one this summer.

On 9th June over 90 people of different faith communities in the borough came together to share an eclectic variety of food not only to fulfil the many dietary requirements but also so that many could have the experience of tasting dishes of different faiths and cultures.  We welcomed Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Spiritualists, Bahai’s, Quakers and representatives from several Christian denominations.

We were delighted that our new borough mayor, who also happens to be a Hindu, accepted our invitation to be present with his wife.  Mayor Pankit Shah’s speech of welcome gave thanks for our 19 years of bringing communities together with a varied programme of events, both lighthearted and serious.  He also commended our schools’ project which gives pupils the experience of meeting people of different faiths and to learn how they live their faiths on a day to day basis.

The focolare singing/music group entertained us with suitably accessible music which everyone enjoyed.  I summed up the evening by expressing what a wonderful world it would be if the atmosphere of friendship shared this evening could be replicated everywhere.
