Wars are being waged throughout our planet and at the same time the world is crying out for peace. Uli Yeomans reports on a recent event she attended in Lancashire for the planting of a peace pole, which expresses the commitment of the local community to working and praying for peace.
It was at an interfaith gathering at the Unitarian church in the little East Lancashire town of Rawtenstall that a small group of us from the market town of Chorley in the West of the county were introduced to the Peace Pole project. A representative from the Alanton Peace Sanctuary* in Dumfriesshire explained the origins of the international Peace Pole Foundation in Japan after the destruction of World War II, and we took part in a beautiful simple installation ceremony. Peace poles can be found all over the world, reminding passers-by of the deep desire of humanity to live in love and peace, and to act accordingly.
