Filippino youth open up Y4UW membership to fellow university students through an innovative game.

IMG_0871Negros Oriental State University is located in Dumaguete City, in the central part of the Philippines. It would be just like any other university in town if not for the Youth for a United World who are enrolled among its students.  With the desire to share with their fellow students the precious pearl that they had found, they came up with the idea of registering the Y4UW (Youth for a United World) officially in the university as a bona fide association whose membership is open to all students. It is now constituted with a core group of about 10 officers and a membership of about 25 students. The officers receive a monthly formation from the local leaders of the Youth for a United World and the New Humanities. They hold a monthly General Assembly at which all the members meet to listen to the “Word of Life”, share their experiences and discuss other business. When they launched the #OpenYourBorders initiative, 250 students together with the President and the Vice President of the University got to know more about Y4UW. Last November 29 to December 3, the Negros Oriental State University celebrated its Foundation Day. The Y4UW association came up with the idea of putting up a booth which they called “The Room”. This was inspired by real-life escape games which are a type of physical adventure games in which players are locked in a room with other participants and they have to use the elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within a set time limit. It was a great success. A good number of young people flocked into “The Room” to play the game. It was a good opportunity to meet many young people for the first time and to explain to them the life and the ideal of the Youth for a United World. The gen and the other members of the association wrote: “We were happy to hear common praises like ‘Wow, what a clever idea!’ or ‘I want to be a part of this group!’ Hearing things like that just made all the struggles and challenges worthwhile. We hope to do it again in the very near future.”
