This third book of Chiara Lubich was first published in 1963. Since then it has been reprinted a number of times and translated into many languages. In these pages, the author offers us true “fragments of wisdom” distilled from her unique spiritual adventure. Each reflection, a limpid expression of spirituality for today, goes straight to the heart and, if read with the eyes of love, draws us back to the essentials. As the author says, “It is important to build our lives on the one thing necessary and allow everything else to fall away. This ‘one thing necessary’ is the love of God.”
“Unity” is an underlying theme of this collection. The author clearly recognizes this as one of the signs of the times. Because of her absolute faith in the words of Jesus, she reveals a prophetic certainty that God will fulfill his promise of unity how and when he chooses. The theme of suffering, intimately linked to that of unity, runs through many of the extracts. This is a reality often denied and yet of fundamental importance for human and spiritual maturity: “The diameter of the foliage of a tree often corresponds to the diameter of its roots. Our heart opens up to Christ’s love according to how much we have suffered and offered for him.”
To sum up, this book is truly a treasure chest of “fragments of wisdom” that can speak to the heart and enlighten the mind.

Un approccio antropologico e teologico alla questione linguistica. Testo di riferimento del pensiero filosofico di Hans Lipps (1889-1941). Medico e filosofo allievo di Husserl, ha insegnato all’Università di Gottinga dal 1922 fino al 1936, poi a Francoforte. Al centro della sua ricerca ha posto l’uomo e l’effettività del darsi della realtà, in dialogo con le posizioni heideggeriane di Essere e tempo. Il progetto di Lipps di inaugurare una logica dell’ermeneutica, condiviso con il filosofo tedesco Georg Misch (1878-1965), costituisce la sua eredità, un’intuizione per molti versi innovativa. Nel testo egli affronta la posizione di una questione filosofica del linguaggio di contro alla linguistica, alla filologia, alla logica formale e fa un richiamo a una ricerca che parta dalla parola proferita con la quale l’uomo interpreta e coglie – strutturando e dando senso – il mondo e se stesso. Il linguaggio è il luogo in cui l’uomo si risveglia all’esistenza venendo interpellato dall’altro, mette in comunicazione due esistenze, le cambia e cambia il rapporto che intrattengono col mondo circostante. “It is difficult to exaggerate the revolutionary impact of the simple affirmation that only love lasts. For if what lasts is love, then the centre of gravity shifts from the self to the other, and so movement (no longer understood in the Aristotelian sense) and relationship (relatio, no longer understood as a category, as the most insignificant accident of being) become central…Only one thing remains, participation in that movement which love itself is. This movement is the rhythm of being; it is the rhythm of that giving which gives itself.”
For the central question is, and must remain, what happens to our perception of God, humanity, society, history and the world when faith in the God of Jesus Christ, that ‘eternal dialogue of communion’, breaks in afresh?
